As you’re preparing your promotional flyer, here are tips to keep in mind:
Include your website or blog. To help people find you online, be sure to post your website or blog in a clear and easy-to-find spot on your flyer. I like to just post one so that it doesn’t clutter up the flyer.
Gather endorsements. Chances are, your writer friends will be eager to supply you with endorsements. (I’ll share more about getting endorsements in a later post about marketing.) A nice, affirming quote always adds interest when promoting your book.
Be sure to include the nuts and bolts information about your book, all in one place. Mine are at the lower bottom right corner of the pdf file. This includes the publisher’s name, the ISBN number so anyone can order your book from anywhere, the page length, and the price. Note whether it is available in paperback or hardback. If it’s available in both, include the price for both.
List 1 or 2 keywords. Because so many search engines exist online and at bookstores, it’s important to list one or two keywords for people to categorize your book. My book’s keywords are: Writing/Reference. Yours might be Educational, Religious, or Self-Help. Check the back of your book to see if your publisher already supplied your book with keywords you can use on your flyer. A way to gain familiarity with various keywords that are used in the publishing industry is to pick up copies of books similar to yours at the bookstore. Many have keywords like this listed either on the back cover or inside on the title page. By categorizing your own book with these keywords it helps others find your book even if they haven’t yet heard of it and are searching for a book on this topic.
Also list where your book is available. Check with your publisher because sometimes publishers like people to order their books straight from the publishing house, and can offer a discount for people who order more than one. My publisher wants buyers to purchase my book from Amazon.com, so that’s why I included the information on my flyer.
