Marketing Tip #7d: Endorsements

The final group of people I contacted to ask for an endorsement for my book included professionals. Of course, since my book was for writers, I contacted publishers and editors. Most of these were people I had worked with over the years, although some I had not really dealt with directly so they might not have known who I was.

Because these were professionals in the business world, I wanted to be careful not to overstep my boundaries or cause a conflict of interest by asking them to endorse a book that their own publishing house wasn’t publishing. I therefore worded my e-mail very carefully to avoid any potential conflict.

First of all, I told them that I mostly wanted to announce my new book to them. Then I politely gave them the option to send in an endorsement if they liked. This gave them the chance to operate within their professional boundaries without feeling like they were offending me if they couldn’t endorse my book because of some legal ramifications or other obligations to their company.

Once again, to avoid spam, I sent out individual e-mails. I gave them 2 weeks to send me their endorsement.

Here’s the sample e-mail I sent to professionals along with a pdf file of the almost-finished book.

Dear [Professional’s name],

I’d like to share exciting news about the publication of my newest book, Yes! You Can Learn How To Write Children’s Books, Get Them Published, and Build a Successful Writing Career (E & E Publishing, August 2009).

The tips and techniques I share in this book are based on my twenty years of experience writing for the children’s book industry. I’m the best-selling and award-winning author of over 75 books and have been published with such houses as Scholastic, Reader’s Digest, Tyndale, Barbour, and Sleeping Bear Press.

I’m attaching the working pdf of the book for you to have. All that is missing is final edits, pages numbers in the Table of Contents, and the Index.

I mostly wanted to get the news out to you, but I also wanted to let you know the publisher is currently accepting short endorsements for the inside front of the book. I know how extremely busy you are, so I don’t want to add another item to your to do list, but if you WANTED to write a short blurb to include, I would consider it a great honor.

Again, please no pressure to do this, but if you would like to do this, you can e-mail me your endorsement by Friday, May 8. (In your e-mail, please include your endorsement, your name exactly how you want it to appear in my book, and your title or byline.)
