Writing for the Holidays

It’s a lot of fun writing for the holiday markets. One of the perks about writing for the holiday market for magazines is that often these issues are given extra care to be presented with pizzazz. Just like a little girl gets all dressed up in her holiday best, holiday magazine issues shine from cover to cover.

There are important tips of the trade that can help you land magazine assignments and book contracts for this exciting market.

For instance, even though most people advise writers to submit holiday articles 6 months in advance, did you know that sometimes magazine publishers start planning out the year ahead in September or October?

I already landed a magazine article assignment for a Christmas, 2010 feature. My deadline is next spring, but if you wait until then to submit an article for that magazine’s December issue, that slot will already be filled. It’s already filled already! So if you’re really serious about writing for this market, start contacting magazine publishers in the fall for next year’s holiday line-up.

For more tips and strategies like these, join me tomorrow on Thursday, December 3 at 10:00 Pacific Standard Time for a live teleclass where I’ll be teaching all about writing for the holiday and seasonal markets with The Children’s Writers Coaching Club. It would be great to have you call in and join in on the fun!
