NaPiBoWriWee:First Drafts

I think the thing that helps me most during this exciting and challenging week is to remember that all I need to do is write the FIRST DRAFT of my picture books! There will be plenty of time to go through and edit and revise and tweak and work on my manuscripts.

For now, though, during NaPiBoWriWee (National Picture Book Writers Week) the goal is to write 7 picture books in 7 days. This helps us get ideas we’ve had running around in our heads and actually sit down and put them on paper. Actually!

Sometimes I think that’s the hardest part of all. We’re afraid we can’t do it. We’re worried our picture book won’t be as good as someone else’s. So we don’t ever sit down and write down our stories.

But right now we don’t have time to worry–we’re just trying to write a new picture book from beginning to end each day for 7 days.

Then, when this fun week is over, we can sit down and self-edit our manuscripts and take them to critique groups and work to polish them to be the best we know how to make them.

So come on! You can do it! Keep writing! We’re over halfway done.
