Book Party: Readers Theatre for African American History

Welcome to my book party! Today and for the next few days, we’re celebrating my book Readers Theatre for African American History.

But this book isn’t just MY book. My husband, Jeff, co-authored this book with me! We’ve written several books together. When people hear this, the first thing they ask is, “What’s it like for a husband and wife to write a book together?”

It’s fun! And in today’s post, I’ll share a little bit about how we work together as a team.

First of all, Jeff teaches fourth grade. So he provides the educational input on a book such as this one. For instance, he field tests some of the material with his own kids in the classroom!

One of the favorite plays the kids did was, SETTLING THE WEST: Bass Reeves Keeps the Law. Jeff’s students loved learning about this amazing US Marshal who took the “Wild” out of the West. He was a legend in his own time. Newspapers carried reports of the amazing ways he tricked and captured the most notorious outlaws of the West in the Indian Territory that became Oklahoma.

By the end of his career, Bass Reeves had captured over 3,000 outlaws and brought them to justice. In 1992, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

But not only did Jeff’s students have fun learning about this amazing man, they made puppets and performed the play for second graders at their school. Those younger students got to learn about him, too.

When Jeff and I write a book like this for teachers to use, he makes sure the book is educationally sound. Plus, he edits every page and offers creative suggestions. Many of the extension activities in these books are based on activities he’s actually created himself and used in his classroom.

And as you can see from the photo at the top of this post, Jeff and I travel around together taking photographs and collecting research about African American History. We love exploring and learning more about the amazing individuals who helped build our nation and continue to influence it in powerful ways.

Now that you’ve learned a little bit about how Jeff and I work as a co-author team, hop on over to Donna McDine’s site, Write What Inspires You! This site is the second stop for my Book Party!

    • Yes, isn’t God amazing!!! Hugs, Nancy
